"An enlightened people will never suffer what was established for their security to be perverted to an act of tyranny." George Nicholas, speaking of the Constitution of the United States at the Virginia convention for ratifying the Constitution in 1788.

more pictures :D

These are pictures of our welcome sign. My family was the first to go through customs and then we walked out and were waiting for the rest of our team and expecting to have Herb and Cory figure out a way to get to the hotel when some Bolivians came up and asked "Smith?" (the way they say "Smith" is "Ee-smith") and then the whole welcome party came out with the banner and hugged, greeted, and kissed us. (don't worry-it's a cultural thing. think "greet with a holy kiss". :D)

Even more pictures! :)

Both these pictures are of us in customs after arriving in Santa Cruz. We had landed and had an hour layover in La Paz but weren't allowed off of the plane.

Some more pictures! First one is Abby, Herb, and I on the plane from LA to Miami. Second one is us setting off Friday morning in the church parking lot.

Pictures from last night

Okay, I was going to attach two pictures to each email but apparently that's not allowed. So here are one per post.
We uploaded pictures to my computer from my mom's camera so here are some pictures! I don't know what order the pictures will upload in but the one of the girl in white and blue with the tambourine is my friend Carla, who is thirteen (tres-say) and was part of the welcoming committee yesterday morning. I will be spelling things in Spanish but the spelling will probably all be wrong.

The other picture has Dad and Marvin sitting next to him.

We got picked up yesterday morning by a whole welcoming committee of people from Luz Divina church. We had a lot of fun trying to overcome the language barrier. In our group we have about six people who know Spanish...so between them we could ask questions and answer questions. Last night they had a welcome service with singing and tambourine dancing done by little girls...so cute. Then we played two games and it was not that easy, what with the language barrier and all. Then we went down the street to a basketball court and they set up a volleyball net and we played with them. Then they challenged us and beat us. Which is sad, considering that we have seven guys six feet and over and they are all shorter than six feet. The pastor's daughter is Tatiana (I am not sure about the spelling of names) and befriended me immediately. She appears to be the best English-speaker the church has, except for the pastor and another man that might be an assistant pastor. So I hung out with Tatiana and her friends last night and received the best Spanish lesson I have ever taken I think. I found out that I can't even pronounce some of their syllables. They would introduce themselves and I would try and then they would laugh and say their name syllable-by-syllable. And then I would try and not be able to pronounce one of the syllables. I got introduced to so many people that I'm going to go back today and not remember any names but about five or six. Our hotel (picture attached; not very enlightening; I shall try to get a picture) room gets WiFi and I am so glad that it does. I left my iPhone at home so I don't think you're going to get many, if any, pictures. This morning the missionary (who is fluent in both English and Spanish :) ) is here and is going to take half our team to visit a different church while his son Philip takes the other half to visit another church. And then tonight we will go back to Luz Divina church.
There is a complimentary breakfast every morning and we are right by "The Plaza", the center of town. If you look up a map of Santa Cruz, it is one of the most organized cities in Bolivia. It is like a wheel, with a center and seven or eight main streets that circle it, getting wider and wider. We are practically in the center. Their driving is another thing that really shocks me. They just push around and there aren't merging or parking laws that we have, that I can see. And when you need to cross the street, you watch for an opening and then walk.

I hope that I have the right attitude here...please pray for me that I am open to whatever God is doing here and whatever He wants me to do. I have this attitude that it's about me and it's like a vacation but it really isn't-it shouldn't be. This is us serving them. We are supposed to be here helping them, not them driving us around and catering to our needs. And, really, I guess my whole perspective on life ought to be that, in whatever I do. And I don't think that it is.

Talk to you all later! Please continue to pray for us and our safety and that we bless many many people. May God bless all of you who are left at home.

On the airplane

Well, we finished the first leg of our journey-LA to Miami. Five-hour non-stop flight. Three-hour or so layover in Miami then six-hour flight to La Paz. Short wait then short flight to Santa Cruz where we arrive at 7:30 am their time. Which is 3:30 CA time. :P hopefully our hotel has WiFi or my updates won't be very regular or long. And pictures will en few and far between, I'm afraid.

I'm so excited about what God is going to do and really feel that this is going to be amazing. I am expecting astounding phenomena to happen.

More updates coming!

Another picture of Machu Picchu

This place has a very interesting history. The Spaniards conquered the Incas but didn't discover this city. This wasn't a primary city but more of a retreat. It was only known locally for four hundred years, until found by Hiriam Bingham in 1911.

Picture of Machu Picchu in Peru

First post

Hello, all. I'm hoping and praying that there is WiFi down where I am in Bolivia so that I can send updates onto this blog. So check back and comment! To start off, here is a map of Bolivia. We are going to fly from LA Friday morning to Miami then from Miami to La Paz (the highest airport in the world and the capitol of Bolivia) then from there to Santa Cruz, where we will do a children's program and build the pastor a house. We will go to the pastor's church (La Luz Divina Church) on both Sundays. (We will be there for ten days.) After which we will be tourists in Peru for three days, flying from Santa Cruz to Cuzco and then traveling by train to see Machu Picchu (see picture in the post above this) and then to Lima and fly from Lima to Miami and from Miami to LA. Interesting fact: Bolivia is east of Florida but because of Daylight Savings, only three hours ahead of CA time. And Santa Cruz's elevation is about the same as LA's.
